What to Do After Session

Keep your tan in top condition with after-care tips from Spray Me Golden in Wichita, Kansas. We listed down reminders to follow and products to avoid after the tanning session.

General Reminders

For long-lasting results, make sure your skin is well-moisturized. Your tan can last 7+ days with proper care. If you exercise and sweat heavily, your tan can fade faster, especially in body fold areas such as arm bends, knee bends, and between breasts so plan your activities accordingly.

After-Tan Care

  • Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing for 8-12 hours, or 1-3 hours with the express formula after the tanning session.
  • Do not exercise, sweat, swim, or bathe within the said time frame.
  • You may rinse with warm water after the 8-12-hour period, or 1-3 hours with the express option. However, do not use exfoliating products or abrasives.
  • Don’t worry if some color is washing off in the shower; this is just excess solution and color guide tint. You will notice a bronze tan after showering. With the express option, the color will gradually get darker after rinsing.
  • Remember to only pat dry your skin, not rub.
  • Use moisturizer or extender lotion to shower-damp skin. After application of extender lotion, scrub palms with soap and a nail brush. Before bedtime, apply moisturizer of your choice.
  • Apply moisturizer once to twice every day. We recommend and offer Hempz and Norvell products. Since extenders used too often can cause skin dryness or poor fading, you can apply extender once a day or every other day.
  • Avoid exfoliating skin. Here’s a list of products that make tan fade faster:

  • Toners

  • Astringents

  •      AHAs

  • BHAs

  • Retin-A, etc.

Products to Avoid

Avoid using the wrong products as these can fade your tan faster. These commonly used body care products can lighten or make a sunless tan blotchy:

  • AHA products (Alpha Hydroxy Acids -glycolic, lactic, malic, citric, and tartaric acids)
  • Anti-acne products that exfoliate or dry the skin — accutane and salicylic acid — can affect tan fading. Skin also peels, which can look unacceptable especially with a tan. Antibiotics or other medications that affect your skin can also affect your tan.
  • Anti-aging products that “renew”, “refresh”, or otherwise exfoliate skin
  • Band-Aid or adhesive tape applies to skin will pull the tan off
  • Bar soaps, especially deodorant or antibacterial varieties
  • BHA products (Beta Hydroxy Acids – salicylic acid)
  • Body hair bleach products will bleach the tan, non-bleach skin lighteners are fine
  • Bore-type adhesive facial strips or peel-off masks
  • Bug spray, perfumes, and body sprays, when sprayed directly onto skin, can remove or fade the tan. Instead, spray clothing or spray a “cloud” of spray that you can walk through, instead of directly onto skin.
  • Dove soap, Dove shower gel, and Curel lotions will fade a tan faster on some people.
  • Facial masks and exfoliating scrubs
  • Hair-inhibiting lotions (Jergens, etc.) tend to make a sunless tan yellow
  • Heavy oils such as mineral oil, baby oil, or coconut oil will remove your tan completely.

Hormonal Changes

During hormonal changes such as ovulation, menstruation, or pregnancy, a woman’s tan may develop differently. Your tan may be streaky or patchy. It may also fade worse or produce lighter to no color at all.
